Fitzrovia – History
Based near London’s West End and ideally positioned between Marylebone and Bloomsbury, the district of Fitzrovia has long been seen as a hub of bohemian life, with writers such as Virgina Woolfe and Arthur Rimbaud once calling the area home. The Fitzroy Tavern was a regular haunt of the bohemian and artistic community from the mid-1920s, and is mentioned in numerous novels from the era. Colville Place and the Middleton Buildings showcase two of London’s oldest surviving residential walkways and on Fitzroy Square you can see one of the few remaining properties designed by renowned architect Ralph Tubb’s.
Fitzrovia – Working Life
Fitzroy Square is a beautiful Georgian square and is home to Fitzroy Square Garden. The square is mostly pedestrianized and is surrounded by impressive historic buildings, with a number offering serviced office space to let. Fitzrovia – Things To Do
Fitzrovia is home to numerous fantastic restaurants, including The Ninth, Sardo and Gaucho Charlotte Street. The Charlotte Street Hotel is a boutique hotel in the district with a cinema incorporated and there are chain hotels such as Radisson and Holiday Inn also in the surrounding streets. A plethora of trendy bars will give you the perfect option for post work drinks and there are many popular haunts including Simmons Bar and Crazy Bear.
Fitzrovia – Future Development
With a number of grade II listed properties in Fitzrovia, any developments are limited. Fitzrovia Square is a protected landmark, so there will not be any expansion around it, however there is call for more housing in the area – it is unclear yet whether this will be provided by new construction in the area or if the usage of existing properties will be changed from retail / business to residential.
