Sydney Partnership ΓÇÿGoing GreenΓÇÖ
The Sydney Better Building Partnership, an association consisting of 13 major organisations located in the city, has agreed to unite in the aim of reducing carbon emissions from their properties.
The proposal is aimed at decreasing energy use, with a goal of cutting 2006 carbon emission levels by 70% across the next 20 years. A variety of initiatives are being employed from the use of cutting-edge technologies and materials, to simply introducing energy efficient lighting.
The businesses within the partnership form close to 60% of Sydney’s CBD office space, therefore the attempts to reduce energy consumption will have a widened effect on the surrounding state. Sydney Mayor, Clover Moore commented that “Sydney is the most power hungry geographical area in the country and buildings produce nearly a quarter of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions” therefore “today’s historic partnership will help Sydney’s businesses reduce their overheads, create opportunities for new businesses and make our city a better place to live and work.”
A number of the partnership companies now feature on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, a listing of the world’s most sustainable companies, due to their on-going environmental commitments.
