Giving Back: OB Sales Team Run for Charity

Giving Back: OB Sales Team Run for Charity

On Sunday 10th June 2012, the 10th annual Great Midlands Fun Run saw thousands of people gather and grab their running shoes to raise awareness for a host of worthy causes.

Among the crowds, our very own Gareth Smith and Stephen Preston were running (and walking) to raise funds for the charities that matter to them most.

ΓÇ£Many have used the word unfair to describe what happened to Gemma,ΓÇ¥ says Gemma BolandΓÇÖs Just Giving page. ΓÇ£It was; it was cruelly unfair that Gemma was robbed of her life just as it was truly beginning.ΓÇ¥

At age 26, Gemma was diagnosed with Sarcoma – a rare form of cancer – and passed away soon after. This is who Gareth and friends (pictured) were running for on Sunday. The Boland family have so far raised over £13,600 for Sarcoma UK and it’s events like the Fun Run that help continue to boost donations toward the £20,000 mark.

ΓÇ£IΓÇÖm still aching!ΓÇ¥ says Gareth, who ran the full 8.5 miles in 1 hour and 9 minutes. ΓÇ£IΓÇÖve hardly been able to walk this week ΓÇô itΓÇÖs pretty embarrassing. Especially since I saw two guys doing the race in wheelchairs, which must be incredibly hard going!ΓÇ¥

Elsewhere in the Fun Run, Sales Manager Stephen was lacing up his trainers as part of his current health campaign and in an effort to raise awareness of AlzheimerΓÇÖs Research UK ΓÇô a charity dedicated to understanding the causes of dementia and finding preventions, treatments and ultimately a cure.

Stephen chose to support AlzheimerΓÇÖs Research UK after losing two grandparents, both of whom were badly affected by dementia in the last years of their lives.

ΓÇ£IΓÇÖm not much of a runner but IΓÇÖd say I ΓÇÿsprint-walkedΓÇÖ the 8.5 miles,ΓÇ¥ says Stephen. ΓÇ£I did it in 2 hours 2 minutes, which IΓÇÖm pretty happy about and of course IΓÇÖm clearly in better shape than Gaz, because I havenΓÇÖt been limping all week!ΓÇ¥

Stay tuned for more updates from the team and more of our on-going efforts to raise money for worthy causes.
