BAM Construction Win Contract to Build Co-Op Head Office in Manchester
It has been announced that the new £100m 15-storey Co-Op headquarters, which has been designed to BREEAM Excellent standards, will be built by BAM Construction.
The work is due to start next month, and upon completion it is due to be one of the most sustainable office properties in Europe.
The property, which has been designed by architects 3D Reid, is set to bring 325,000 sq ft of office space to central Manchester and green space for public use. There will also be an eco-friendly energy system which will provide all heat and power needs from renewable sources, and an emphasis on encouraging greener commuting methods – such as cycling and public transport.
According to MEN, Steve Byrne, director of BAM in the North West, said: “This is a hugely impressive project not only in design, construction techniques and the expertise it demands of us, but also for how it will contribute to the community and economy around it. At BAM, that is something we value.”
Last year, Co-Op Chief Executive Peter Marks commented that the new building will “reflect the continuing success and ethical values of the organisation in its design, construction, and its relationship both with employees and surrounding communities.”
Commenting on the appointment of BAM Construction, he said:
“During the past few months we have been working with BAM on finalising the specifications and costings and preparing the site. They have demonstrated that they have the right approach and so we have every confidence that they will deliver a truly magnificent new home for the group.”
