A Closer Look: Office Space in Broadgate Tower

Located in the City of London, Broadgate Tower is a 35-floor skyscraper that was completed in 2009 as part of the prestigious 30-acre Broadgate development, owned as a joint venture by British Land and Blackstone.

The Broadgate estate was started in the 1980s on the original site of Broad Street station, and has brought almost 4 million sq ft of retail, leisure and office space to the City which is now used by over 35,000 people.

Currently the fourth tallest building in the City of London behind Heron Tower, Tower 42 and the Gherkin, the 538 ft Broadgate Tower was designed by award-winning firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) – the same Chicago-based architects that designed the luxurious Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the worldΓÇÖs tallest building.

Built at an estimated cost of ┬ú240 million, the glass and steel Broadgate Tower was 10 years in the planning phase and endured two former designs before it was accepted and advanced in its present form. Among the challenges faced by developers was, as a skyscraper, that it should not black views of London landmarks – such as restricting views of the Tower of London, nor intrude on the famous perspective of St Paul’s from King Henry’s Mound in Richmond Park.

Construction finally started in 2005 and was especially challenging due to its positioning over the entrance to Liverpool Street station, which would see train tracks emerging from beneath the very base of the structure; a particularly welcoming feature of the tower for commuters and City workers.

Since its completion in 2009, the tower has become an accepted part of the City of London skyline and home to many large-scale corporations. In addition, the 11th floor is now available to rent as serviced office space, which provides a key opportunity for smaller firms to become established in this high-profile business address.

Clients benefit from superb views across London as well as a number of top of the range facilities including meeting space with conference facilities, contemporary lounge areas, high-speed internet access and on-site café restaurants.
