2,000 UK Government staff to move into new office space in Liverpool

2,000 staff from the UK Border Agency are set to be brought together under one roof, with a much-publicized move into 220,000 sq ft of office space in Liverpool’s commercial district.

Currently based across six buildings, the staff will be relocated to ‘The Capital’ in Old Hall Street, where they will continue to manage their current duties. This includes handling British citizenship applications, immigration law, ID cards to foreign nationals, and asylum claims.

Said to be the largest office letting in Liverpool history, the deal was settled following a series of complex negotiations, which also involved the building’s current tenants who have agreed to move up to another floor to make room for the staff.

George Downing, chairman of property group Downing and owners of The Capital, said that this letting is a “clear endorsement” of the quality of the building, and the appeal of Liverpool as a place to work and live.

Speaking to Place North West, he said: “Over the past three years, we have invested heavily in the fabric of The Capital, transforming its interior into the kind of contemporary, intelligent space befitting of a cosmopolitan business hub.

“Our investment in The Capital has played a significant role in the wider regeneration of Liverpool’s commercial district. The result is regeneration in action – taking what we already have, investing in its future and creating new opportunities for the local economy.”

Director of operations for the UK Border Agency in the North West, Eddy Montgomery, said that the move to a new, more efficient headquarters “will save taxpayers around £10m”.

The move will begin immediately and is expected to be completed in early 2012.
