Work starts on new Aberdeen College training facility

A £12m project to construct a new facility at Aberdeen College, financed by the Scottish Funding Council, has recently been kicked off.

The scheme, which brings a state-of-the-art Construction Training Facility to the College’s Altens site, will provide a training area for joinery, brickwork, painting and decorating and plumbing courses.

A new library, learning resource centre, fitness suite and eating area also form part of the plan.

A key element of the design was that the building would reach a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, which fits in with the College’s drive for sustainability.

As a result, the building is said to include a mixture of eco-friendly measures including solar panels, its own wind turbine, and natural ventilation. Rain water will also be collected from the roof for use in toilets.

The project is set for completion in August 2010 – keep up to date by visiting the College’s dedicated page at www.abcol.ac.uk/altens.
