Walkie Talkie Tower Receives Occupiers
The ΓÇ£Walkie TalkieΓÇ¥ tower is close to securing its first tenant ΓÇô with online insurer Markel set to take on 80,000 sq. ft of the EC3 development.
Reported by CoStar News, Markel are apparently one of six potential occupiers sizing up the building at present, in advance of the buildings expected completion in early 2014. Once completed, the building will provide 690,000 sq. ft. of Grade A office space.
According to the report, the arrival of the 20 Fenchurch Street development (a.k.a. the Walkie Talkie Tower) is likely to coincide with a flurry of expired leases and break clauses across the capital.
With its unique bulbous design (Which apparently nearly resulted in its nickname being ΓÇ£The PintΓÇ¥) the building is already being branded as ΓÇ£IconicΓÇ¥ ΓÇô but the top heavy design was reportedly introduced to increase the buildings rental income ΓÇô with the larger top floors capable of generating higher rental levels.
As to whether it will be actually become ΓÇ£IconicΓÇ¥ compared to its nearby neighbor ΓÇ£The GherkinΓÇ¥ ΓÇô time will only tell – But at 525 ft. (160m) and 36 storeys high, the ΓÇ£Walkie TalkieΓÇ¥ tower will certainly add to the iconic London skyline and provide a first class destination for domestic and international businesses.
