Survey Finds Young Workers Suffering from Stress

Survey Finds Young Workers Suffering from Stress

Is it high expectations on millennial shoulders or the fear of losing work in a down economy? 70% of younger workers are suffering the effects of overwhelming stress.

A survey of workplace stress undertaken by financial services provider Friends Life has found that 7 in 10 workers under the age of 24 who call in sick do so because of stress.

According to their findings, the rate of debilitating stress rises as the age group falls:

  • 67% of 18-24 year olds
  • 54% of 25-34 year olds
  • 47% of 35-44 years olds
  • 43% of 45-54 year olds

The survey was taken among 2000 full-time workers, who largely blamed the state of the economy for their anxiety ΓÇô dating stressful feelings about money and work back to 2008.

ΓÇ£This is an extremely worrying number of young people who are starting their working life under strain and is something which needs to be monitored carefully,ΓÇ¥ says Director of Group Protection at Friends Life.

‘Greater Expectations’

Dr Ian Drever of The Priory Group considers why this stress-related sickness is so prevalent among younger age groups:

ΓÇ£There may be a couple of dynamics at play as to why younger people are more prone to call in sick due to stress than the older generation,ΓÇ¥ says Dr Drever.

ΓÇ£Firstly, younger people maybe more stressed due to their job roles being more time pressured, having greater expectations upon them to climb the career ladder and cope with numerous demands in more challenging economic times.

ΓÇ£They may also be more aware of the signs of stress in themselves ΓÇô such as disrupted sleep or diminished cognitive performance ΓÇô so can recognise it at an earlier stage, and then flag this up within the work environment.ΓÇ¥

In a study undertaken by various academic groups including the University College of London earlier this year found that a more stressful and higher paid job results in a 50% higher chance of heart attack among UK workers.

Do you think millennials are more prone to stress or is this symptomatic of a different working world? Share your thoughts in the comments.
