Possible plans to transform historic brewery into Leicester office space
Local campaigners fear that a former brewery in the heart of historic Leicester may be pulled down to make way for new developments. A lifeline has been thrown in by local developers, whose possible plans include renovating the site to include office space, housing and leisure facilities.
Having lain empty for several years, the ex-brewery, located on Highcross Street, has been put forward for listed status, but has been repeatedly rejected. The earliest records show that the building was used as a brewery back in 1795, though there are accounts of brewing in the area as early as 1664.
Tim Shattock, of Sturgis Shattock and Partners, has reportedly said that although no firm plans have been drawn up, one possible scheme for the site included a mixed venture of office space, housing and leisure.
