Office Workers Driven to Distraction

Chatter, ringing, coughing, sneezing ΓÇô whatever your personal irritant, it could be bringing down the productivity levels of office workers by 66% according to new research from Avanta Serviced Office Group.

Quizing 1,000 UK office workers, the poll revealed that 82.5% of office workers found themselves regularly distracted by office noise. The poll also showed that nearly half of those affected suffered in silence, rather than addressing the issue with colleagues.

Interestingly, 31% of those polled stated that they had been driven out of the office due to excessive noise ΓÇô opting to escape to the sanctuary of home, library – or ironically, a local caf├⌐ (A Grande Mocha Latte must have soothing qualities).

Commenting on the important role sounds play in the relationship of environment and user, Julian Treasure, renowned sound experts and TED Talks speaker explained:

ΓÇ£The sound around us has a powerful effect on our psychological state, as well as on our cognitive ability and our social behaviour,ΓÇ¥ said Julian. “Intelligent sound design can help improve concentration, reduce fatigue and stress, and consequently create more productive working environments.ΓÇ¥

Incorporating these design elements to tackling the issue head-on, Avanta Serviced Office Group have begun trialling the ΓÇ£Avanta Sound RoomΓÇ¥ at their centre in Covent Garden.

Chris Adair from Adair Acoustic Design, who collaborated with Julian Treasure and Avanta on the ΓÇ£Sound RoomΓÇ¥ project, explained that:

ΓÇ£The effect of simple technology like sound absorbing panels, or even altering the orientation of a room, can turn an unworkable space into somewhere fit for function. By considering sound as an integral part of the workplace and taking some simple steps to mitigate the issues related to open plan working, employers will create a more motivated and productive workforceΓÇ¥.
