New Scotland Yard Offices for Sale?
The Metropolitan Police has announced it will be reviewing plans to sell New Scotland Yard in a bid to save £500m. But who will buy the bland landmark when its iconic revolving signage has gone?
Since 1967, the capital police force has been based at the New Scotland Yard HQ in Victoria. But that could soon change as those in charge consider downsizing to meet serious budget cuts.
The Metropolitan Police has been charged with the responsibility to shave £500 million from its current spend by 2015.
The building currently costs £11 million a year to run. It is also estimated that a further £50 million would be needed to bring the building up to scratch in the near future; money that the Met cannot afford to add to its £3.6 billion annual spend.
ΓÇ£New Scotland Yard is a 60s building, so the infrastructure and support services that are in the building, I think, from the heating and ventilation through to the IT provision, are from the 60s,ΓÇ¥ says Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackay.
ΓÇ£As we go through this change programme itΓÇÖs going to have space in it that we donΓÇÖt need. In Central London thatΓÇÖs an expensive luxury.ΓÇ¥
As London becomes more and more attractive to big global names, could New Scotland Yard transform into the home of a single corporate or will it be the latest iconic London business centre?
At 400,000 square feet, this average grey office block has room enough for many businesses and may yet maintain its sentimental value in the public memory.
What do you think? Will New Scotland Yard forever be iconic if sold or will the glory go with its revolving grey signage? Share your thoughts in the comments.
