Is the Modern Office Making us Fat?
From birthday cakes to mid-morning nibbles and cream laden coffee, the modern office space is a minefield of temptation for anyone looking to watch their weight.
But with us humans apparently pre-programed to eat anything that is dropped in front of us, do office workers stand any chance of keeping their waistline under control?
Well according to a recent report in the Daily Mail, it will be an uphill struggle for the many office workers focused on losing a few extra pounds.
ΓÇ£If youΓÇÖre trying to watch your weight, youΓÇÖve got no chance ΓÇö we are biologically programmed to eat whatΓÇÖs put in front of usΓÇ¥ explained Professor Peter Rogers, head of experimental psychology at the University of Bristol.
ΓÇ£Humans evolved to exist in an environment where food was scarce, so we are wired to exploit opportunities for palatable, energy-dense food.ΓÇ¥
So with donuts, croissants and other delectable delights seemingly taking over the average office workers diet, it is perhaps unsurprising that the report also highlights a rise in Type 2 diabetes amongst those in an office bound role.
But can we escape our seemingly endless march toward ill health? Well despite our biological instincts fighting against it, it would appear that good old will power offers the best solution to this expanding problem.
Suggestions on how to bolster this very easy to lose commodity include identifying a healthy eating ΓÇ£buddyΓÇ¥, eating your lunch away from your desk in order to not lose track of when you become ΓÇ£fullΓÇ¥ and keeping a variety of healthy snacks in your desk to fight of the cravings.
