Glasgow: Business and Office Space in the Future City
With the Commonwealth Games coming to the city next summer, smart companies who want office space in Glasgow will be looking right now. So hereΓÇÖs our need-to-know guide about what Glasgow has to offer.
Glasgow: ScotlandΓÇÖs largest city
While Edinburgh might be the capital, Glasgow is ScotlandΓÇÖs largest city, with a population of just under 600,000. The city spans almost seventy square miles, taking in key areas such as its Merchant City business district to the east and its International Financial Services District to the west.
While the cityΓÇÖs engineering heritage is still alive and well, today, a wide range of big businesses call Glasgow home. These include LloydΓÇÖs TSB and the Royal Bank of Scotland, along with energy provider Scottish Power who recently renewed their commitment to the city with the announcement of plans to build a new HQ.
A number of home-grown global food and beverage companies can also be found here, including BaxterΓÇÖs and Whyte & Mackay.
The headquarters of ScotlandΓÇÖs main broadcast company, STV Group, is also based in Glasgow.
WhoΓÇÖs the city attracting right now?
According to our recent research, while EdinburghΓÇÖs serviced office market might be attracting bigger businesses than Glasgow right now, the Glasgow market is seeing a higher rate of activity, with more businesses taking space in the city.
While the Commonwealth Games is one factor driving businesses to the city, its status as a Future Cities Demonstrator (which includes £24million of investment), has also placed Glasgow in the spotlight.
In fact, while Edinburgh has been attracting larger, more established businesses, Glasgow has been busy positioning itself as a location for innovation.
For smaller businesses in the digital creative sector, the recently launched Digital & Creative Clyde Launchpad, which offers funding to tech companies, is one attraction. £900,000 of funding has been provided by the Technology Strategy Board to support the scheme, which is based on a similar investment programme it made into Tech City, Shoreditch in 2011.
