For Sale: BBC Television Centre
The studio and office space at BBC Television Centre has officially been put to market, with the sale of the iconic site expected to raise hundreds of millions of pounds.
First signaled in 2007, the sale could result in 50 years of broadcasting heritage coming to an end at the West London site ΓÇô the studios and production offices of which are currently home to favorites such as Strictly Come Dancing as well being the location from which classics such as Monty PythonΓÇÖs Flying Circus were also filmed.
Occupying some 14 acres, the site sits opposite the Westfield Shopping Centre and would seem certain to attract the attention of commercial developers looking to boost the supply of Grade A Office Space in West London.
“With high investor demand for commercial property in London and a shortage of landmark sites as distinctive as Television Centre, we anticipate strong competition for both conventional and innovative proposals.” explained Chris Kane, head of BBC Workplace.
According to various reports however, the BBC are also happy to consider alternative options for Television Centre, with the possibility of a joint venture also on the table in order to acknowledge the buildings ΓÇ£central role in the history of the BBCΓÇ¥.
Should the joint venture be pursued, it could take the form of a ΓÇ£BBC LandΓÇ¥ style visitor attraction according to a report by the Guardian. Other options apparently include the creation of a new Creative Quarter and the possibility of the BBC leasing its former studio and office space back for individual productions.
