Background

Canary Wharf is situated on the Isle of Dogs, at the West India Docks, an area that was once one of the busiest docks in the world. The majority of the properties in the district were warehouses and stores, to accommodate for the goods being shipped in and out of the docks. In 1980, the docks were closed and the area embarked on a massive re-development plan, seeing the first skyscraper, One Canada Square, opening in 1991 and posing a substantial threat to the nearby City, which had always been the only major business and finance hub. Canary Wharf has continued to grow and in 2014, saw its first residential building constructed – paving the way for many more mixed-use properties, as well as traditional office space.
