What does Birmingham have to offer?
The answer is – more than you may think. You probably know Birmingham for its famous shopping and nightlife destinations, with the Bullring, Mailbox, newly opened Grand Central and Pavilions shopping centres offering designer brands, high street names and unique boutiques. Newly renovated and expanded Birmingham Grand Central Station has transformed the New Street hub into a contemporary, unique destination for not only rail travel, but also dining and shopping, with the country’s largest John Lewis based there and numerous eateries such as Carluccio’s, Pho and PAUL but a few.
Should I base my business in Birmingham?
Yes! The office space industry in Birmingham City Centre is booming, with demand at its highest in years. Companies already finding home in the city centre are big names such as Cross Country Rail, Mitchell’s and Butler, HSBC, RBS and many more. It’s not only the city centre that has seen a demand for office space, the outskirts are also very popular with large corporations including Dunlop (now Goodyear Dunlop), who have long had a presence in the city at their “Fort Dunlop” site. Jaguar Landrover (JLR) have an enormous presence throughout the Birmingham area, with office space, warehousing and factory space in Castle Bromwich and Solihull. Also based on the outskirts of the city centre, in Bourneville, you will find Cadbury – a real Birmingham treasure and internationally recognised chocolate brand. The internationally recognised NEC arena can be found on the outskirts of Birmingham City Centre, just off the M42 Motorway, and is home to numerous events, tradeshows, conferences and fairs. In the city centre, you will find the famous International Conference Centre (ICC), Europe’s premier conference venue. The iconic property offers executive meeting rooms in various sizes and has a number of event halls, for up to 500 people and perfect for conferences, exhibitions or banqueting. New Street Train Station is a fantastic transport hub in the very heart of Birmingham, operating regular rail services across the country, with a journey time of less than 90 minutes to London Euston with Virgin Trains. There are direct, covered walkways, from the platforms to both Grand Central amenities and the Bullring shopping centre. Additional train stations in the city centre are Birmingham Moor Street and Birmingham Snow Hill, with the latter serving the city’s financial area including Colmore Row. Birmingham has a large international airport, with daily flights to worldwide destinations including the USA and Asia, making it a perfect location for multi-national businesses. The airport can be accessed from the city centre within 15 minutes by car or less by rail and has an onsite business park, where you will find British Car Auctions and Lloyds. Trams will soon be operating in the city, conveniently connecting much of the city centre to the surrounding areas and Birmingham International Airport.
What does the future hold for Birmingham?
The “Big City Plan” is Birmingham’s 20 year vision for the city centre and is sure to see the arrival of a number of positive and exciting changes. Road networks, public transport and properties will be further developed and proposals are in place to create more distinct character areas, or quarters, within the city – similar to that seen in Manchester. 2016 will see the opening of a new superior 4* hotel on Broad Street, Park Regis, and a number of new gourmet eateries, such as The Alchemist, Gusto and Adam’s. With interest in offices in the city peaking and the new Grand Central terminal attracting big names, 8 million sq ft of office space is said to be completed by 2019.
