Hampshire is a thriving community, and is one of the UK's most affluent counties. Hampshire enjoys very low unemployment levels of just 1.9%. Traditionally Hampshire relied on Agriculture for its economy, but more recently high technology and knowledge based industries have taken over as the most popular, followed by distribution and export.

Where is it?
Hampshire is located on the South Coast of England, and borders the Counties of Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire, Wiltshire and Dorset. There are a number of major Towns in the County including Portsmouth and Southampton in the South of the County and Basingstoke, Farmborough and Winchester towards the North.
What are the Transport Links like?
The County has good transport links, with the M27 running north of Southampton, Fareham and Gosport, giving access to the M3 and A3 to the North. Southampton and Portsmouth are both home to ports, providing excellent access to France and the rest of Europe.
Who Lives There?
Hampshire has a population of 1 240 800. Southampton has the highest population with 221 000, followed by Portsmouth with 188 700.
Hampshire is particularly popular for older age groups, with many of the coastal areas attracting retired people. This is not to say that Hampshire is a sleepy county by any means. Its quaint smaller towns including Winchester, Liphook and Aldershot attract professionals looking for a high standard of living with easy access to London. Portsmouth and Southampton draw the highest proportion of younger people, not least because of Universities!
History
Hampshire became a popular county around the time of the Norman Conquest, when Kings favoured the area because of its access to the Sea. From the 12th Century, when international trade and export began, the ports at Portsmouth and Southampton made the area both affluent and popular.
Strong military presence has existed in the County since World War II, with the Army and Royal Navy Bases in Hampshire.
