Innocent or rude: What's in a Name?

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet according to Shakespeare – but when it comes to websites a name is often the first thing we look at before deciding to dip into its content.

With this in mind we thought we would highlight some of our favourite websites that have “accidentally” ended up with an unfortunate name - which may lead browsers to misinterpret what they are only one click away from…and yes they all appear to be genuine!

---

#1. www.childrenswear.co.uk

Not in fact a site dedicated to profanity spitting minors, this online store actually specialises in providing suits and party frocks for children.

#2. www.accesstherapists.com

Possibly the most unfortunate name in my opinion, this website is actually dedicated to helping those in need of assessment from an Occupational or Physical therapist.

#3. www.penisland.net

Despite still being phallic in nature, the products on offer from this website are actually bulk order custom designed pens for business.

#4. www.WTF.org

Despite “text speak” seemingly taking over the world, this website is not dedicated to promoting a widely used abbreviation – but in fact the home of the World Taekwondo Federation.

------

But while these choices may have been deliberate (if slightly shortsighted), spare a thought for residents of the Cook Islands in the South Pacific who, through no fault of their own, have been assigned the unfortunate domain name of .co.ck.

Amazing how people can miss things like this - you would have thought someone would have pointed it out along the way!

Took me a while to see what was wrong with the Access therapists site but was laughing out loud when I did!

You missed one - or perhaps decided it wasn't suitable for publication.

Powergen decided to have a series of websites with their name plus the name of the country - powergenUK, powergendeutschland etc.

All went well until they reached www.powergenitalia.it.

Well I would be laughing, had I not seen this article sooo many times before. Not just on the web I may add - these examples have been on TV and magazine articles as well. Sorry, had to say. A bad day.
