Elizabeth House, a landmark building in central Manchester's St Peter's Square, is set to undergo a £50m redevelopment following the approval of city councillors this week.

The site was previously home to the Dutch Pancake Company. The new scheme has been designed by Glenn Howells Architects and is set to introduce 22,500 sq ft of office space within the 270,000 sq ft building, which is more than twice the size of the original Elizabeth House.

The ground level will include mixed-use space, incorporating areas for public exhibitions as well as a large double height reception, which will offer views across St Peter's Square.

According to TheBusinessDesk, the report states: "The proposal is interesting and modern, and would be acceptable and appropriate in the city context, and with the surrounding heritage assets.

"This approach of introducing a modern building into a historic environment has worked successfully elsewhere in Manchester and the scheme respects the setting of the St Peter's Sq conservation area and the listed buildings associated with it."
