The masterplan to bring 5,000 civil servants to Manchester, known as the 'Whitehall of the North', has reached a vital stage in the planning process. The detailed proposals are being sent out to Council chiefs this week, ahead of a public consultation in the New Year.

The office scheme is set to be constructed around a new public park near Piccadilly Station, and will involve the transformation of the former Mayfield railway station.

Up to 700,000 sq ft of office space will be provided if the development goes ahead, with building works expected to start in 2012-13, and the civil servants in place by 2014.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the scheme will bring welcome regeneration and jobs to the area.

Regional Minister Phil Woolas said: "The masterplan is an exciting vision and comes at a time when the Government is looking to move more civil servants out of London and the South East."

He continues, "The benefits of the North West are obvious to all of us who live and work here. This sort of proposed development can only enhance the region's reputation for attracting civil servants from the south."
