WH Smith to open shops in office buildings

Stationery and book retailer WH Smith is reportedly planning to open shops in office properties across the UK, and has already ploughed ahead with the launch of one store at an office property in Liverpool.

Following a successful trial of stores opened in hospitals, the company is now turning to the workplace and planning to open a potential 80 shops in offices around the country. The stories will sell mostly confectionery, stationery and magazines.

According to the Guardian, one store has already been opened in an office property in Liverpool where 2,500 people work, and Chief Executive of WH Smith Kate Swann said that another eight to ten would open in the coming year.

Annual financial results show that WH Smith's airport and rail station outlets are said to perform phenomenally well, and are currently just short of making greater profits than the main high street stores, despite having less than 15% of shop floor space.
