A parking levy scheme, which will be charged per office parking space, could be enforced in Nottingham from 2012.

The fees will be imposed on all companies with 11 or more parking spaces. Expected to start at £250 a year per parking space, the levy - which has been endorsed by the Department for Transport - will then be increased to £350 after two years.

According to a report by The Telegraph, Nottingham was the first city to apply for the levy, while Milton Keynes, Exeter, Cambridge and Oxford have all reportedly expressed interest in the scheme.

The project is expected to help resolve city centre congestion issues, as companies will be free to pass the fees onto their staff. This will encourage employees to use public transport or car share rather than drive to work separately. Environmental groups have reportedly welcomed the scheme.

However many businesses and motoring officials have openly rejected the project, expressing concern that the extra costs would damage local businesses or - where the levy is passed onto staff - add further financial pressure on the workforce.
