National recognition for travel scheme launched in Sutton, London

An eco-friendly travel scheme launched in Sutton, in Greater London, recently won the Sustainable Transport Strategy prize at the Municipal Journal Awards.

Initially launched in September 2006, Smarter Travel Sutton is a partnership between Sutton Council and TfL - Transport for London - which aims to reduce the amount of cars on the road and encourage greener methods of travelling, such as cycling and public transport.

In an article by The Sutton Guardian, Councillor Colin Hall, executive member for environment, said: "There has also been a big shift in the way people think about travel and a real desire to protect the environment and cut congestion on our roads."

He also added: "There's a lot more to come too. We will soon be talking about major transport projects in places such as Wallington, which will make walking, cycling and public transport the best way to travel in the borough."

According to the article, cycling increased by 50% last year - a positive move towards greener transport methods.
