100-year old Aberdeen property to receive facelift

The iconic Marischal College in Aberdeen, the world's second largest granite building, is set to be re-built to make way for Aberdeen City Council's new corporate headquarters. The prized 1906 facade will be preserved, while the interior of the building is due to be demolished and replaced by modern office space.

The development will be carried out by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd, one of the UK's leading and most experienced construction companies. Work is due to start this summer, to be completed in 2011.

The news has been well-received by Aberdeen City Council - especially due to the fact that the iconic facade will be restored and the property will be put back to good use. It's reportedly been neglected since the University of Aberdeen vacated the building in the 1990's.
