According to the Telegraph, Treasury rules to control costs mean that all new Government agencies – NADO included – have to be based outside of London. The agency is being set up to combat the use of performance-enhancing drugs and strengthen the UK’s credentials on the run-up the Olympics in 2012.
A decision by the Treasury as to whether NADO will remain in their London office, or move elsewhere – Coventry among the possibilities – will be made next week.

Director Simon Reid said: "The building has simply been overtaken by the quality of other office developments in Manchester, and the owners took the decision to invest again to put it back on the map."
The revamp will see updates to all the common areas, as well as the installation of showers on some floors, so staff who cycle to work (making use of the new cycle racks in the basement) can freshen up before starting work.

Office space discussion and networking day - feedback
Published by Jo on Thursday, 18 June 2009 at 11:43 AM
Last week saw officebroker.com deliver the Life Cycle seminar in London, along with Ipitomi, Rio Designs and RJ Metis. Despite the unfortunate timing of a tube strike which impacted heavily on numbers, we were delighted to welcome a determined bunch, who turned up and contributed to discussions throughout the afternoon.
There were many topics of discussion throughout the afternoon, mostly focused on how to improve and maintain office space and working practices. The underlying theme was the credit crunch, and how businesses can make the most out of their office buildings without spending too much money.
Derek Dickinson from Rio Designs delivered useful tips on how to keep the office environment fresh - most notably by replacing or updating worn-out furniture, a simple notion that can help brighten the appearance of your office and boost employee’s morale.
Justin Harley from RJ Metis highlighted the benefits of CentreCharge - an affordable software solution which allows users to manage the lifecycle of a customer from enquiry right through to billing.
Chris Dumpleton from Ipitomi also presented during the afternoon, explaining how to make the most out of IT and Telecoms, now and in the future.
Overall the afternoon was a huge success, and we were delighted to take part in the event. We'll keep you posted on any future seminars that we take part in, and hope that next time the tube is running at full steam!

Report shows increase per person in office space
Published by Liz on Friday, 12 June 2009 at 2:04 PM
A recent study by IFMA, a US-based facility management association, has revealed that the average office space per person has risen by almost 40 square feet in two years.
According to the study, employees now average 435sq ft of office space, compared to 396sf in 2007. The increase in space is said to be partly because of employees being made redundant due to the recession.
In addition, the report states that office space today is greener than it used to be, thanks to an increase in energy efficiency – something that ultimately helps businesses save money and survive the credit crunch. Some building operators are also said to be turning their heating or air conditioning down by one degree, in order to cut costs.
The report shows that only 11% of those surveyed said that their facilities had no green elements, while more than four out of five businesses have recycling programmes, and 62% use green cleaning products.
This report tentatively suggests that businesses are waking up to greener practises, and recognising them as ways to cut costs. Are you following greener practises at work? If so we'd love to hear about it - and whether or not it's helping you to save money for your business. Feel free to get in touch with your news and views below.

MP office space expenditure row deepens
Published by Jo on Thursday, 11 June 2009 at 5:18 PM
This week, Shahid Malik faces yet more questions over his expenses for office space. The MP, whose remit covers Dewsbury, near Leeds, is being questioned over expenses claimed for an item listed as "office 2". According to the telegraph.co.uk, his claims paid the rent for office space at a property where he also had "living accommodation".
The telegraph.co.uk reveals that Mr Malik said the reasons behind renting the second office were because the office he inherited from his predecessor, MP Anne Taylor, had been too small:
"I rented additional office space in my constituency because the office which I took over from my predecessor did not have enough room to accommodate my staff, who were working with me to serve the needs of my constituents."
He is also reported to have claimed for rent on his second office at a time when he was also claiming public money for his designated second home in London.
Here at officebroker.com we're always keen to hear your views. Was Mr Malik within his rights to claim expenses for a second office, or is he claiming too much public money? Air your views using the comment tool below.

The market for office space in Reading is said to be looking up, according to a meeting of property experts that took place at Winnersh Triangle, a new business park and office development in Reading. They claim that businesses are looking to snap up commercial office space in the area, despite the recession. Testament to this, several deals and re-leasing agreements have recently been put through in Reading, which is evidence that the market is picking up.
In addition, much of the Winnersh Triangle development has already been pre-let to major companies. The park is set to be the most sustainable in the Thames Valley, producing less than half the carbon emissions of a standard office.

Possible plans to transform historic brewery into Leicester office space
Published by Lou on Tuesday, 09 June 2009 at 9:47 AM
Local campaigners fear that a former brewery in the heart of historic Leicester may be pulled down to make way for new developments. A lifeline has been thrown in by local developers, whose possible plans include renovating the site to include office space, housing and leisure facilities.
Having lain empty for several years, the ex-brewery, located on Highcross Street, has been put forward for listed status, but has been repeatedly rejected. The earliest records show that the building was used as a brewery back in 1795, though there are accounts of brewing in the area as early as 1664.
Tim Shattock, of Sturgis Shattock and Partners, has reportedly said that although no firm plans have been drawn up, one possible scheme for the site included a mixed venture of office space, housing and leisure.

Manchester office space gets a confidence boost
Published by Marie on Monday, 08 June 2009 at 10:15 AM
Recent reports suggest that the north-west property market, including office space in Manchester, is not as adversely affected by the current economic situation as previously expected.
The Business Centre Association's (BCA) panel of property experts are said to conclude that although there is an issue of oversupply, demand is strong compared with some other UK cities. A recent construction in Salford known as Media City has encouraged a number of media companies to search for office space in the Manchester area, which has helped boost demand.
Jennifer Brooke from the BCA, said: "As a region we are greatly encouraged that Manchester continues to do well with the number of new enquiries to the flexible space sector remaining high."

Take-over of London office space
Published by Dan on Friday, 05 June 2009 at 12:20 PM
Following the recent fall-out of business centre provider MLS, many London office properties and centres have been taken over by other companies – most recently in the central London area.
Financial problems last year led to a high number of centre closures and a major reorganisation for business centre provider MLS. Many of their office buildings and centres have since been handed back to the respective landlord or taken over, with some tenants reportedly evicted by MLS earlier this year under a shortened notice period.
Other business centres and office properties that have been taken over from the troubled company can be found in areas of London, Watford, Oxford, Milton Keynes, Cheltenham, Sheffield and Manchester.

Design House is due to move from its current Richmond space, and move into GP Studio's Waterloo offices in early August.
Managing Director of Design House, Lavinia Culverhouse, told Design Week that the reason behind the decision was due to collaboration: "Previously, a few clients of ours had asked for advice on retail design options and we'd recommended GP Studio... Birmingham office space survey shows positive results for the city
Published by Jo on Thursday, 04 June 2009 at 10:16 AM
A survey of 100 senior managers of Birmingham offices has produced optimistic results for the UK's second city. Property consultants Drivers Jonas found that the vast majority of companies they surveyed would want to stay in the city centre.
Speaking to the Birmingham Post, Philippa Pickavance, agency partner for Drivers Jonas's Birmingham office, reported that: "Of the 100 companies surveyed, almost 70 per cent of businesses had been based in the city centre for ten years or more and a third for over 25 years."
The survey looked at top considerations for businesses when moving office. Not surprisingly in our current climate, results show that cost was the top key factor, followed by convenience for staff, image, and then location. Eco-friendly buildings weren't ranked highly on the property strategy - although businesses are said to be "considering the green agenda".
Respondents stated that the best aspects of Birmingham are its central location and good public transport. On top of that, a whopping 84 per cent of respondents reported that there was currently nothing missing from their city centre. For those who would consider moving away from the centre, office space in Solihull is currently perceived as the most important business centre after Birmingham.

Facebook's new office space
Published by Jo on Tuesday, 02 June 2009 at 3:37 PM
Online social networking giant Facebook last month moved to new offices in California, at the Stanford Research Park. The new office space has an open-plan design, with many walls left purposefully unfinished - this is something of a blank canvas for Facebook employees, who are free to use the blank space as they see fit.
Employee Everett Katigbak tells the story of the move on the Facebook blog:
"Just as people make the space on the website their own, we've opted to do the same with our physical space. We've left a lot of the walls white and the spaces unfinished to encourage employees to add the finishing touches."
The new office space is designed to allow collaboration. People and teams sit close together, with executives and managers seated in central areas where they are accessible to all employees.
What's your office space like - and do you feel it gives you the best possible access to the people you work with most? What could you improve on? Feel free to comment about your office space or on this article below. For more information on serviced office space in the UK visit officebroker.com, or find out more about office space in the USA.

100-year old Aberdeen property to receive facelift
Published by Jo on Tuesday, 02 June 2009 at 9:43 AM
The iconic Marischal College in Aberdeen, the world's second largest granite building, is set to be re-built to make way for Aberdeen City Council's new corporate headquarters. The prized 1906 facade will be preserved, while the interior of the building is due to be demolished and replaced by modern office space.
The development will be carried out by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd, one of the UK's leading and most experienced construction companies. Work is due to start this summer, to be completed in 2011.
The news has been well-received by Aberdeen City Council - especially due to the fact that the iconic facade will be restored and the property will be put back to good use. It's reportedly been neglected since the University of Aberdeen vacated the building in the 1990's.

Work resumes on Nottingham office space development
Published by Jo on Monday, 01 June 2009 at 11:28 AM
A new office space development on Canal Street in Nottingham is currently underway. The scheme will include around 55,000 sq ft of office space, apartments, a bar and bistro.
Started in 2007, work was slowed last year as the recession took its toll – but work is now back to full steam. So much so that a crane blocked part of Canal Street yesterday while construction workers were busily making up for lost time. No doubt this part of the job was scheduled in for a Sunday to avoid Monday morning chaos!
If work continues as expected, the development should be completed in early 2010.
