Do you have a good work-life balance?
When you are working hard, the time flies by, but it isn't healthy to avoid taking holidays when you are running your own business. Everyone needs a break, especially when you are under pressure to constantly deliver results.
Sure signs that you need a break include poor concentration, a lack of enthusiasm and a constant nagging from your family that they need some quality time with you! For full time employees, the minimum legal holiday entitlement is four weeks, but for self employed professionals this plummets to zero days entitlement.
It may not always be easy to take time out, but here are some solutions for you which may make it a less painful proposition:
- If you are planning a long holiday of a week or more, let your clients know well in advance. This has the added benefit of showing you are highly organised and also well in demand.
- Alter your business plan. Structure your plan with the assumption that you will only earn money for 48 weeks of the year, not the full 52.
- See holidays as being a necessary expense. Treat the cost of the holiday as a business expense, the same way you would tax. If you create a budget the break will be much easier.
- Long weekends are a God send! Take a Friday and/or a Monday off and have an extra special 3 or 4 days for rejuvenation. You will be amazed at what a difference a short break will have for you.
- If you have a serviced office, or a virtual office, use the reception and telephone answering staff whilst you are away. They can pass on the message that you are on holiday to any clients who call for you. This saves you worrying about missed business or constantly ringing phones!
- Combine business and pleasure. If you are abroad on business and it crosses over into the weekend, use the weekend to sight-see, relax and enjoy the surroundings. Always remember to apportion the expenses to avoid any Inland Revenue issues.
- Try an activity holiday. It will refocus your mind and help you learn a new skill and take your mind off work.
You will be amazed at what a difference a short break will have for you.
It is understandable that you may not want to take a break from a new start venture during its infancy, but if you plan well ahead and work to some of the suggestions given here, you will be more likely to remain successful and focused on building your business.
