Lancashire has a population of 1 134 976. Manchester has the highest population in the county with over 400 000 people. The Lancashire area is especially popular with students, with both Liverpool and Manchester having high achieving universities based there, making the population a mix of young and vibrant students and professionals who work in the larger cities. Smaller towns such as Stockport are equally popular, but are less expensive to live in than Manchester or Liverpool.
History
The county of Lancashire dates back as far as the 10th Century and was traditionally known for it cotton and traditional craft industries. Many of Lancashire's old mills are still standing today, mainly in parts of Blackburn, Preston and Burnley. These mills have mainly been converted to use as trendy apartments or office space facilities. The famous Blackpool Tower and Pleasure Beach have long seen Lancashire as a draw for tourists from the UK and abroad.
