General Information:

Southern Ireland, officially called the Republic of Ireland, is the third largest island in Europe and is separated from the British mainland by the Irish Sea. Ireland became part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain in 1801 but following the Irish war of Independence ended in 1921, it became a dominion within the British Empire which was effectively independent but still had links with the British Crown until 1949 when Southern Ireland left the Commonwealth and became the Republic of Ireland whilst Northern Ireland chose to remain as part of the United Kingdom. The population of Southern Ireland is roughly 4.25 million and its name derives from the Celtic goddess Eire. The entire Island is 32,595 square mls (84,431 square km) and the Republic of Ireland makes up 27132 mls of this land (roughly five sixths of the total). A lot of the ROI office space for rent is found in Dublin and many serviced office business centres are available offering a wide directory of corporate facilities and benefits.

Political and Physical Geography:

Ireland is divided into four areas or provinces and these are Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connacht and these in turn are divided into 32 counties, 26 of which are found in the Republic of Ireland. Counties include Donegal, Cavan, Galway, Monaghanare, Waterford, Tipperary, Dublin, Cork and Limerick. Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle as a result of the frequent rainfall and mild climate producing widespread vegetation and the county’s longest river is the River Shannon which is 240 mls long. The country homes a ring of mountains surrounding the lower lying central areas, the highest of which is in County Kerry called Carrauntoohil and is 3406 ft.

Many commerce organisations are drawn to Ireland’s cities and most office space in Ireland is located in these cites inc. offices to rent in Dublin, office spaces to let in Belfast, Cork office space for renting, Derry office lets, commercial property in Limerick, executive offices in Galway, flexible office space in Lisburn, serviced offices to rent in Waterford, offices in Newry with car parking, Kilkenny office space with broadband and office rental in Armagh. Many of these Irish office spaces also provide ad hoc meeting suites, cctv, reception services and onsite property management executives that will help your business save time and money, something that every director likes! Terms of rent are far more flexible than leases, sublet / sublease terms and naturally outright sale too. Leasing an office or commercial real estate doesn’t allow you to grow your office as you expand whereas serviced offices in Ireland allow you to grow from just one workstation into an open-plan suite of several thousand sqft that would make a great corporate headquarters.

History:

In 1829 the Catholic Emancipation occurred which allowed Catholics to sit in Parliament following the Catholic Relief Act of 1829, in 1831 a group of armed police took cattle from a Roman Catholic priest in place of the compulsory tax or tithe to the Anglican Church of Ireland and this sparked the Tithe War which largely ended in 1836 after the Tithe Commutation Act 1836 lowered the amount of tax or tithe that was expected. In 1845 a potato blight devastated roughly two thirds of the country’s crop which in turn lead to the Great Irish Famine which caused the deaths of approximately 1 million people. In 1913 the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union went on strike after forty workers were fired for being suspected members of the ITGWU which became known as the Dublin Lockout. In 1916 the Easter Rising occurred when the Irish Republican Brotherhood issued the Proclamation of the Irish Republic after they took control of main government property in Dublin.

Following world war one, in 1918 the Lord Mayor acted on a resolution of the Dublin Corporation to resist conscription and held a meeting at Mansion House to formulate appropriate plans, then in 1919 members of the Army of the Irish Republic killed two Royal Irish Constabulary members. Many people consider this to be the first act of the Irish War of Independence which then ended in 1921 when the Anglo-Irish treaty was signed and the Irish Free State was created, however in the following year, 1922, anti-treaty forces that were occupying the Four Courts were forced to surrender after heavy artillery bombardment by renowned Irish military figure Michael Collins. This act led to the start of the Irish civil war which lasted until the following year until Frank Aiken, Chief of Staff for the IRA ordered volunteers to put down their arms. Trouble and violence remained a problem for the country from the 1960’s through to 1998 when a peace deal was signed and a degree of peace was achieved. In 1973, Ireland became a member of the European Community and in 1990 the country elected Mary Robinson as its first female president.
